The Doubt That Sinks Us

"Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. 'You of little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'" - Matthew 14:31
When Peter began to sink, what exactly did he doubt? It's a fascinating question with a surprising answer. Peter didn't doubt Jesus' power—after all, Jesus continued walking on water even as Peter sank. What Peter doubted was his own worthiness to participate in such a miracle.
This reveals something profound about our own struggles with faith. Often, we have no trouble believing that God is powerful. We believe He can do miracles. We even believe He does them for others. What we struggle to believe is that He wants to do them through us.
We look at our flaws, our past failures, our inadequacies, and we think, "Surely God can't use someone like me." We believe in God's power but doubt our place in His plan. This is the doubt that sinks us—not questioning what God can do, but questioning if He can do it through us.
Peter's story reminds us that God doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called. Jesus didn't invite Peter onto the water because Peter was perfect—He invited him because He loved him and had plans for him, imperfections and all.
"What holds us back so much is this reality that we believe that God can do it through them. God can do it through them. Look at their life. God can use them. But when it gets down to it, what holds us short of our miracle is believing that God can use me."
Reflect: In what areas of your life are you believing that God can work through others but doubting He can work through you?
Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I've limited what You can do through me because of my own insecurities. Help me to see myself as You see me—not defined by my failures but by Your calling on my life. Thank You that You use imperfect people to accomplish Your perfect will. Amen.
