Character That Sustains Success
Thursday
'Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.' - Matthew 12:33
Success without character is like a house built on sand—it looks impressive until the storms come. We've all witnessed talented people who achieved great things only to lose everything because their character couldn't sustain their success. The headlines are filled with stories of leaders who had incredible abilities but lacked the integrity to maintain what they built.
Character isn't about being perfect; it's about being consistent. It's who you are when no one is looking, when the cameras are off, and when there's no immediate reward for doing the right thing. Character is the internal compass that guides your decisions regardless of external pressures or temptations.
The challenge is that we can often achieve things that our character isn't ready to handle. We can get promoted before we're mature enough to lead well. We can gain influence before we've learned to use it responsibly. We can accumulate wealth before we understand how to steward it wisely.
This is why Jesus emphasized remaining in Him. When we stay connected to the source of all goodness, our character is continually shaped and strengthened. We develop the internal qualities necessary to handle whatever success comes our way. We learn humility, integrity, compassion, and wisdom—the very traits that allow us to sustain and multiply our impact.
Building character is a daily choice. It's choosing honesty when a lie would be easier. It's treating people with respect regardless of their status. It's keeping your word even when it costs you. These choices might seem small, but they're building the foundation that will determine whether your future success stands or falls.
The question isn't whether you can achieve great things—you can. The question is: are you building the character necessary to sustain and steward those achievements well?
It's possible to achieve things that your character can't sustain.
Reflect: In what areas of your life might your character need strengthening to sustain the success or influence you're seeking, and what specific steps can you take to develop those character traits?
Prayer: God, I want to be someone whose character can sustain whatever success You bring into my life. Help me develop integrity, humility, and wisdom. Shape my heart so that I can be trusted with influence and impact. Make me good from the inside out. Amen.
