Examining Your Heart's Attachments
Thursday
"For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God." - Deuteronomy 4:24
Our hearts are constantly forming attachments—to people, possessions, pursuits, and pleasures. Many of these attachments are good gifts from God, but they require regular examination to ensure they remain in their proper place.
Even the most wholesome relationships and activities can subtly shift from being blessings we enjoy to idols we serve. The devoted parent, the dedicated professional, the committed volunteer—all can cross the line from healthy engagement to unhealthy devotion.
God invites us to regularly examine our hearts with honest questions: What do I turn to first when I'm stressed or anxious? Where do I find my identity and worth? What would devastate me to lose? These questions help reveal what might be competing with God for first place in our lives.
This examination isn't about guilt or shame—it's about freedom. When we identify the things that have captured our hearts, we can begin the process of reordering our loves, placing God back at the center where we find true peace.
"Do I rely on this more than God for my comfort, my identity, or my worth?"
Reflect: If God asked you to give up something precious to you right now, what would be most difficult to surrender, and what does that reveal about your heart?
Prayer: Lord, give me courage to honestly examine what I'm holding too tightly. Help me to see where my attachments have become unhealthy and where I've looked to good gifts to provide what only You can give. Grant me the strength to hold all things with open hands before You. Amen.
