From Transaction to Relationship

"If only we had died by the LORD's hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death." - Exodus 16:3
Have you ever found yourself treating God like a vending machine? Insert prayer, expect blessing. When the desired outcome doesn't appear, frustration follows. This transactional approach to faith is common but misses the heart of what God desires with us.
In Exodus, we see the Israelites fall into this pattern repeatedly. Despite being miraculously delivered from slavery, they complained when things didn't go as expected. "If only we had died by the LORD's hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death." Their relationship with God was based on what He could do for them, not who He was.
This mindset persists today. We attend church, tithe, and pray, then expect God to fulfill His end of what we perceive as a contract. But God doesn't operate on contracts—He establishes covenants. The difference is profound.
God doesn't owe us anything. In fact, He's already paid the ultimate price through Jesus. Our relationship with Him isn't about what we can get, but about knowing and loving the One who gave everything for us. Today, consider whether your faith is built on transactions or relationship. Are you seeking God's hand (what He can give) or His face (who He is)?
I think sometimes we treat God like he's a vending machine. That that is our faith level with God, is that we look at him the same way we look as a vending machine. We put in our prayer, we put in our. Not 50 cents, but we put in our due diligence.
Reflect: When was the last time you felt disappointed with God because He didn't meet your expectations? How might viewing your faith as a relationship rather than a transaction change your perspective?
Prayer: Father, forgive me for the times I've treated You like a vending machine rather than the loving God You are. Help me to seek You for who You are, not just what You can do for me. Transform my heart to desire relationship over transaction. Amen.
