Grace for Your Worst Day

Thursday

'And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.' - Mark 16:6-7 (King James Version)

When the angel announced Jesus' resurrection, he gave specific instructions: "Go tell the disciples, including Peter." Peter had just experienced his worst day - denying Jesus three times when courage mattered most. Yet God didn't write him off. Instead, He singled Peter out for grace, not shame. Your failures don't surprise God, and your worst moments don't disqualify you from His plans. He factors in your mistakes when He writes your story. That day you lost your temper, made that poor choice, or fell short of your own expectations - God already knew about it and still has a future for you. Peter's denial became part of his testimony, not the end of his story. Your failures can become the foundation for your future ministry to others who struggle.

It Can't End Like This: Finding Hope When Life Feels Unfinished

Life has a way of leaving us hanging, doesn't it? Sometimes we find ourselves in situations that feel incomplete, unresolved, or simply wrong. We look at our circumstances and think, "It can't end like this." If you've ever felt that way, you're not alone - and you're absolutely right.

Why Did Mark End His Gospel So Abruptly?

The Gospel of Mark originally ended at verse 8 of chapter 16, with the women fleeing from Jesus' tomb in fear and bewilderment. No resurrection appearances, no triumphant encounters - just an empty tomb and frightened witnesses who "said nothing to anyone because they were too frightened." Later scribes felt compelled to add more verses because they thought, "It can't end like this!" They added accounts of Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene, the disciples on the Emmaus road, and other resurrection encounters. But Mark intentionally left his gospel hanging, creating what feels like an unfinished story.

What Does It Mean When Life Feels Unfinished?

Mark's abrupt ending mirrors how many of us feel about our own lives. We have: - Unanswered prayers that leave us questioning - Unresolved situations that cause stress - Responsibilities we feel called to fulfill but lack the strength to complete - Barriers that seem impossible to overcome Just like the women walking to Jesus' tomb, we often find ourselves asking, "Who will roll away the stone for us?"

God Works Behind the Scenes

Here's what's remarkable about the Easter story: while the women worried about who would move the massive stone, God had already sent an angel to roll it away. "'For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life'" - John 3:16 (KJV). The very thing they stressed about during their entire journey to the tomb had already been handled before they arrived. God does some of His best work when nobody's watching. While you're worrying, He's already sending answers.

The Angel Sat on the Stone

Matthew's account tells us the angel didn't just roll the stone away - he sat on it. This wasn't because he was tired; it was a statement of victory. What used to be a barrier became a seat of rest. The thing that looked immovable became irrelevant. God isn't overwhelmed by your situation. He's not stressed about the things that keep you awake at night. He's already conquered what you're still crying about.

What About Peter's Failures?

The angel's message included specific instructions: "Go tell his disciples, including Peter." This detail is crucial because Peter had experienced the worst day of his life - denying Jesus three times, just as Jesus had predicted. Peter must have felt disqualified, thinking his failures had ended any chance of being used by God again. But God singled him out not in shame, but in grace. The message was clear: "Your bad day doesn't define you. What I did defines you."

God Factors in Your Failures

Jesus knew Peter would deny Him, yet He still had plans for Peter's future. God factors in our failures when He writes our stories. Your struggles don't disqualify you, and your failures don't surprise God. "'Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest'" - Matthew 11:28 (KJV).

Why Does Mark End with Fear?

Mark's ending with fear might seem strange, but it's actually profound. Fear often accompanies new beginnings. Every step of faith typically starts with fear - not because fear and faith can't coexist, but because they usually do. Faith isn't the absence of fear; it's doing what God calls you to do despite your fears. It's stepping out even when you're scared of what people might think or what might happen.

The Story Continues

Mark doesn't put a neat bow on his gospel because the resurrection isn't an ending - it's a beginning. Your old story might end in fear, disappointment, or failure, but the resurrection starts a new story with new life. The empty tomb means: - Death doesn't have the final word - Your past doesn't determine your future - God specializes in impossible situations - There's always more to your story

Life Application

This week, stop trying to figure out how God will move your "stone." Instead of worrying about the barriers in your life, trust that God is already working behind the scenes. He's not overwhelmed by your situation - He's sitting on top of it. If you feel like Peter - disqualified by your failures - remember that God includes you by name in His plans. Your mistakes don't surprise Him, and they don't disqualify you from His purposes. Take that step of faith, even if you're afraid. The resurrection means it can't end with your current circumstances. There's more to your story. **Questions for Reflection:** - What "stone" are you worrying about that God might have already moved? - How have past failures made you feel disqualified from God's plans? - What step of faith is God calling you to take, despite your fears? - How does knowing that God factors in your failures change your perspective on your future?
